Plantation drives by Army

In a bid to instil sensitivity towards environmental conservation among the masses, the Army authorities of Kasauli and Solan recently undertook massive plantation drives in their respective areas where 5,000 saplings were planted.

An Army spokesperson said the sapling drive, which began in July saw plantation of 3,000 saplings in Kasauli and 2,000 in Solan. The drive was aimed at enhancing the green cover of the hills and educating the people about the significance of a Green India.

Station Commander, Kasauli Army Station, Vikram Sharma, said the drive would encourage the youth to engage in similar environmental conservation activities as well as in protection of a green environment. He said the youth were also being sensitised about the need to conserve the heritage. The trees should be given the same care as a small child is given, as they help in curbing soil erosion, re-charging of the water resources and enhancing the productivity of the soil.

A large number of schoolchildren also participated in the sapling plantation drive.

Sharma said more such campaigns would be organised in the future. Apart from the Army staff, their families also lent support in the plantation drive. — TNS
